Microneedling is a popular choice for anyone looking to brighten their skin, reduce the appearance of acne scars and eliminate fine lines and wrinkles. However, to achieve the best results and avoid any complications, having a good understanding of microneedling aftercare is essential. But before going any further, it’s probably a good idea to explain what microneedling is.
Microneedling involves creating micro-injuries on the surface of the skin with a hand-held device containing ultra-fine needles to kick-start your body’s natural healing response. As a result, the body starts to produce more collagen and build new cells resulting in smoother, firmer-looking skin.
Sounds good, but if you’ve just had your first treatment, you’re likely concerned about how your skin currently looks. Don’t worry. It’s normal for your skin to appear inflamed or red, bloody or scratched, and it may even feel rough to the touch and tender. Trust us, when we say these side effects will gradually fade away. Meanwhile to help ease your mind and ensure a smooth recovery and glowing skin, here are some do’s and don’ts for you to follow.
Facial cleansing: Your skin will be extremely sensitive after microneedling so it’s best to avoid washing it for the first 48 hours. After that, use a sulfate-free cleanser to gently remove oil, dirt, and sweat without irritating your skin.
Use sunscreen diligently: You should always stay out of the sun and avoid sunbeds immediately after microneeding. For the first 2 weeks following microneedling, you should reach for the sunscreen whenever you’re exposed to the sun. We recommend wearing sunscreen daily anyway, but it’s important to take even more care to protect your healing skin from sun damage when it’s in the recovery period. Always use SPF30 sunscreen or above.
Hydrate and moisturize: Drink plenty of water to keep hydrated and promote healing but avoid caffeine and alcohol for the first 72 hours following your treatment as it can dehydrate the skin and slow down healing. Instead, try switching to herbal teas. Hyaluronic acid is the perfect serum to apply to the face following microneedling as it dives deeper into the skin to plump and hydrate. If your skin feels particularly dry, coconut oil can be applied to lock in the moisture.
Soothing products: Products containing chamomile, aloe vera, and centella asiatica, help calm inflammation and reduce redness. Only use products recommended by your skincare provider to avoid irritation.
Avoid active topical skincare products: Do not be tempted to use skincare products that have active ingredients like retinol or alpha acids as they can cause more irritation to your skin. It’s best to stick to products recommended by your provider for at least a week following your microneedling session.
Skip the makeup: The skin channels will be open after microneedling to enable your skin to breathe, so don’t apply makeup as this could penetrate the pores leading to more irritation. It’s best to avoid makeup for 24 to 48 hours to give your skin time to recover.
Don’t pick your skin: It’s common for the skin to feel flaky or dry following microneedling but resist the temptation to pick at any peeling skin as it can lead to uneven healing and scarring.
Avoid excessive exercise: Skip strenuous workouts, saunas, and hot showers for at least 48 hours. Sweating can introduce bacteria into the micro-wounds, increasing the risk of irritation and breakouts.
Day 1-2:
Your skin may appear red and feel almost like it’s sunburned. Sensitivity and mild swelling are common. Keep your skincare routine minimal and focus on hydration.
Day 3-5:
Some peeling and flaking may occur as the skin begins to heal. Resist the urge to exfoliate and let the dead skin shed naturally.
Day 5-7:
Redness and irritation should subside, and your skin will start to look more radiant. Continue using gentle skincare products and stay consistent with sun protection.
Week 2 and Beyond:
Collagen production continues for several weeks, and your skin will gradually improve. You can reintroduce active ingredients like retinol and vitamin C but start slowly to avoid irritation.
While mild redness and sensitivity are to be expected, if you experience excessive swelling, prolonged redness, severe peeling, or signs of infection like pus or fever you should contact your skincare professional.
